Archives for category: Assignments

An assignment from architects Millar Howard Workshop to photograph their new shop design for Oeno Wines in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. The design centres around a new racking system incorporating storage and lighting. The idea developed with the client was to place the bottles in a large array and then light the bottle labels and the ‘barkers’ each with an individual LED. The shop is a celebration of a huge variety of wines sourced direct from the growers.

The main challenge photographically was to convey a sense of space in confined surroundings and deal with the very high contrast lighting environment whilst showing of the details and materials of the refined design.

A record year of GCSE results at Magdalen College School.  A*s have been awarded to 76.49% of the year-group – a record. 97.3% of the year group achieved A* or A. Two boys – Huw Charles and Stefan Lacny – achieved 11 A*s each.  Most astonishing of all Alex Polywka, 16, who’s battling a deadly tumour scores top GCSEs at Magdalen college School despite brain surgery and chemotherapy.

Bagang is a traditional fishing structure for catching anchovy made of bamboo in Sabah, Borneo. A large fishing net is placed on the sea bottom and light is used to attract the fishes gathering above the net. When this looks promising the net is lifted to collect all the fishes trapped inside. The structure is very beautiful, floating on the sea like a sketch of a house, which I imagine holds the dreams of those who build them.

Pulau Selingan (is one of three island located 40 kilometers north of Sandakan in Sabah, east Malaysia. During the peak season (October) up to 50 turtles come ashore to lay eggs. Marine turtles have been around for 230 million years at least, but due to human activities they have been brought, over the past hundred years, to the brink of extinction.
