Interior of The Oxford University Museum of Natural History

The interior of the incomparable Oxford University Museum of Natural History, where each column is a different native rock and each capital is a different biologically correct plant whilst the overall effect is that of the skeleton of the building and animals intertwined. The use of iron colums and glass to let so much light in the space was a precursor to the hi tech movement in modern architecture. The building was designed by Thomas Newenham Deane and Benjamin Woodward in 1850. The roof has recently been restored so the decoration is much clearer.

Gloucester Cathedral Cloisters, Gloucestershire, England Gloucester Cathedral Cloisters, Gloucestershire, England

The  beautiful cloisters at Gloucester Cathedral are the earliest surviving fan vaults, having been designed between 1351 and 1377 by Thomas de Cambridge. The cloisters have featured as a location in three Harry Potter Films.

The gothic choir of Gloucester cathedral is a unique and spectacular work, the walls so heavily panelled as to suggest a huge stone cage (disguising the Norman arches behind) crowned by a glorious net-like vault adorned with numerous bosses (those over the Altar with superb figures of Christ and angels) whilst the east wall is entirely glazing in delicate stone tracery, and still preserving most of it’s original 14th century stained glass. The soaring central tower, also richly panelled with delicate pinnacles, is another testament to the abbey’s increasing wealth at this time.

The start of a photo series based on a walk along the United Kingdom’s longest river, The Severn.

This section was based on a 8km walk from Chepstow to the Severn via Offa’s Dyke and a 6km route from Lydney to the Severn via the Old Docks completed on the same day.

“Whispering Death” was the nick name for the F-111 fighter-bomber that were housed inside these Hardened Aircraft Shelters during the cold war in the RAF Upper Heyford, Quick Reaction Alert Facility, UK. I thought the moniker was also an apt title for this series of photographs of the military paranoia of the era. Crews sat for four hour shifts in nuclear-armed F-111 bombers, engines running in the middle of the Oxfordshire countryside ready to respond to any Soviet threat at a moments notice. The facility is the best preserved Cold War Airfield in Europe.

Mila Furstova and Coldplay, Royal Albert Hall, London, 2nd July

Had a peek behind the scenes for the last Coldplay concert of their Ghost Stories Tour at the the Royal Albert Hall as my wife is artist Mila Fürstová who created the art for Ghost Stories based on Chris Martin’s lyrics. Moments before they went on stage the band signed some editions of Mila’s art which will be auctioned to raise money for the charity Kids Company. After the signing the band invited her in the pre-show huddle, where Chris thanked her for the artwork she’s produced.

For information on purchasing editioned prints of Mila’s Coldplay work see albumartists.co.uk

An assignment for De Boer structures and & Twelve PR to provide architectural photography of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Great Pavilion 2014. I think I was the only one not primarily pointing their camera at the beautiful plants on display!

The wide angle interiors were taken with a wide angle (17mm) tilt shift lens. and the details with a 70-200mm telephoto lens. All were tripod mounted. A gentle gradient filter was applied to balance the tone of bright roof structure with the darker displays when they both appeared in the same frame.
