The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (also known as the Holocaust Memorial), Berlin, Germany. Designed by architect Peter Eisenman and engineer Buro Happold. Built 2003-4

According to Eisenman’s project text, the stelae are designed to produce an uneasy, confusing atmosphere, and the whole sculpture aims to represent a supposedly ordered system that has lost touch with human reason.

The Jewish Museum, Berlin by architect Daniel Libeskind is proof, should any be needed, that architecture can convey emotion.

House of the Cultures of the World "Haus der Kulturen der Welt",

Designed in 1957 by the American architect Hugh Stubbins and engineer Fred Severud as a gift from the United States. John F. Kennedy spoke here during his June 1963 visit to West Berlin. On May 21, 1980 the roof collapsed killing one and injuring numerous people. The hall was rebuilt in its original style and reopened in 1987 in time for the 750 year anniversary of the founding of Berlin.

To Berliners it is also known as the Schwangere Auster “pregnant oyster”.

An assignment for Danish Engineers, Søren Jensen to photograph Cancer Centre Naestved, Denmark. Architect: Effekt. Due to the white cladding and faceted form the appearance of building was particularly sensitive to the changing light angles throughout the day necessitating staying on location from 9am to 11pm to capture the building in the optimum light.

Walking into the buildings at RAF Bicester in 2013 is like entering a time capsule back to the second world war. RAF Bicester was part of Bomber Command in WW2 being used mainly for training. The RAF left in 1976 and most of the buildings have been left untouched since. The site is of architectural and historical importance being the most complete and untouched example of such a collection of buildings most having being built in the 1920’s. The site contains a number of listed buildings and scheduled monuments.

What I found fascinating about the site as a photographic subject is that the decay and abandonment have added new layers of meaning to the utilitarian buildings so the impression today is an intriguing mix of the evocative and the impenetrable.

In May 2013 the site was sold to Bicester Heritage who kindly gave me permission to photograph the site before they start renovation. My particular thanks to Daniel Geoghegan and Charles Morgan.
