Whoa. That’s definitely a way to liven up what appears to be an older building. But I’m puzzled about why they called it Marmite. I’m familiar with the Marmite that comes in jars, but I can’t see how that relates to this mural. Any info available?
Good job isn’t it! I’m guessing they named it Marmite as Brits use it for things that you either Love or Hate – like marmite – or this artwork. Conservationists have spluttered into their real ale over it already: http://kingscrossenvironment.com/2012/03/27/street-art-marmite-unveiled-on-euston-road/
Thanks for the link! As the other blog said, everybody either likes it or hates it. Hmm.
That’s really cool, I’d love to see it in person
Hi… It wasn’t called marmite by the artists… it’s untitled but known as the Megaro Project. The marmite thing was a term coined by a journalist to describe the mixed response from locals. The original article is here: http://kingscrossenvironment.com/2012/03/27/street-art-marmite-unveiled-on-euston-road/ There’s also a documentary of the work in progress here… http://vimeo.com/m/41214166
Great photos by the way Quintin.
cheers, Steve.
Hi Steve. thanks for putting me right, I’ve changed the blog title and text accordingly. Good to see the vid!
I love your photos of it. As for the design and the building itself – I also have mixed feelings. I tend to prefer curved forms for murals rather than geometrical and straight lines as I find the latter tend to make the eye wander too far from the actual concept being presented.
When was it painted? I had a look on Google street view and it’s there (though oddly, the mural’s there in one advance of the mouse but not in another, which leads me to believe that they update their maps on wildly different dates!) but I’ve not been in London for five years so wouldn’t be able to look at it ‘in the flesh’ (in the brick?)
These sorts of colourful murals always remind me of the Apple boutique in Baker Street in my youth. Heck, that dates me!
I find the building itself undistinguished and not helped by the , what i assume are , later additions of a double row dormer windows at the top. For this reason i thin it was a good move to keep the art angular as it deconstructs the building and gives it new , visual meaning whereas it it were a curved composition I think it would simply look like a painting on a building. It was painted this year, not sure when i’m afraid. Interesting about the google double image.

I am absolutely in love with this!
its great isn’t it!
Quintin, this time also you have chosen a great object for shooting. Megaro hotel is looking really interesting and you captured it with best possible angel to make it more artistic.
Thanks Rhea – some buildings just ask to be photographed!
