Sunrise at Bar Ledges, Charmouth, Dorset. Sunrise at Bar Ledges, Charmouth, Dorset.

I’d been put up the previous night by Mac Mackenney, a friend from the Royal Geographical Society who’s company Max Adventure, provides logistical support to Everest expeditions, Ranulph Fiennes’ exploits and far flung vehicle based TV shows. Tales of adventure flowed and it was some reluctance that I accepted the need to turn in. The morning is still night as he waves me off at Charmouth from one of his well travelled 4x4s.

At the deserted beach in Charmouth waves break in quick succession, threatening and insistent. A red smear above the horizon hints at the dawn about to break, Golden Cap is shrouded in mist.

The cliffs here are tiers of landslip and the whole thing looks like it may slide into the sea at any moment. In parts the mud oozes down the…

Wareham Quay, Dorset. Wareham Quay, Dorset.

Wareham has many fine historical buildings and a rare architectural unity that I’d last seen in Faversham. I’d like to linger but it’s still dark when I start. My admiring glances up and down the street are mistaken for bewilderment and a friendly local asks if I’m lost and tells me where I can buy tea at this early hour. There is just time for some tripod work by the quay before heavy rain encourages me to continue.

Entering woodland the rain stops for a time but large drops continue to fall from the leaves into the peaty black pools below sending inky circles rippling outwards.

Two dozen wild horses roam freely on the lanes. Most of the occasional vehicles passing are Land Rovers which have to wait as the horses saunter past. Flocks of pheasants rise squawking from the side of hedgerows as I walk past.

Harbour Park, Littlehampton, Sussex. Harbour Park, Littlehampton, Sussex.

Rain falls so insistently the geese stand with their bills tucked under their wings. Moments later I’m startled by a lighting flash and immediate thunder clap that sounds overhead – the rain dial is upped to monsoon.

Hours of rain walking later I pause in the Bait House cafe in Felpham and feel embarrassed that they had to mop after me to prevent other customers slipping after all the rain sloughed off me into the floor. The waiter in the cafe says sometimes the flood is so bad everyone’s fish ponds overflow – “There’s carp in our river and everyone tries to catch it”

Helter Skelter, Brighton, Sussex Helter Skelter, Brighton, Sussex

Brighton on a Sunday morning: its homeless, swearing and dirty cohabit the park benches with sleeping revellers. The brightly painted shops padlocked and shuttered, seagulls screeching. The people I pass who are not horizontal all carry an object telegraphing their originality: a guitar, a zigzag poncho, a neck tattoo, a guitar, a long board, a long beard.

On the promenade a sentimental wet sand sculpture of a dog with a litter is being prepared for the days trade. West pier floats otherworldly out to sea, burnt, broken and disconnected. A structure called i360 is being built where the pier entrance once stood looking like a power station chimney in the centre of the city.

I’ve spent much time in the Islamic world photographing the masterpieces of Islamic Architecture so its fascinating to see this simple and concise explanation of the geometry behind the seemingly infinitely complex designs such as these from Iran below.
